Australia: Growth in retail sales increases slightly in December

Nominal retail sales rose 0.2% in December over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which was slightly above the 0.1% increase recorded in November. The result undershot market expectations of a 0.3% rise.

On a year-on-year basis, the pace of growth in retail sales accelerated from the 4.1% increase tallied in November to a 4.3% rise in December. Annual average growth in retail sales inched down from November’s 5.4% to 5.3% in December.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see private consumption growing 2.5% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, the panel sees private consumption expanding 2.6%.
