Angola: Inflation soars in August to over-twelve-year high

In August, consumer prices rose 3.31% over the previous month, which came in below the 4.04% increase recorded in July. According to the National Statistical Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estatística), the figure in August reflected increases in 11 out of the 12 components of the index, with the food and non-alcoholic beverages category recording the largest rise.

Inflation surged from 35.3% in July to 38.2% in August, the highest level since July 2004. Meanwhile, the trend continued to point upward: annual average inflation rose markedly from 20.8% in July to 23.1% in August, a level last seen in November 2005.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panel participants expect inflation of 25.6% in 2016, which is up 0.8 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2017, the panel foresees inflation of 14.8%.
