Angola: Inflation hits a new high in December

Consumer prices rose 2.17% in December from the previous month, virtually mirroring November’s 2.13% rise. According to the National Statistical Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estatística), December’s figure reflected a broad-based increase in prices, with a particularly significant uptick in the price of the alcoholic beverages and tobacco, leisure, recreation and culture, and clothing and footwear sub-categories.

Inflation edged up from 41.2% in November to 41.9% in December, the highest level since June 2004. Meanwhile, annual average inflation increased from 30.1% 32.4%, a figure not seen in over 11 years.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panel participants expect inflation of 29.4% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2018, the panel foresees inflation of 20.7%.
