January 5, 2017
Consumer prices rose 2.17% in December from the previous month, virtually mirroring November’s 2.13% rise. According to the National Statistical Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estatística), December’s figure reflected a broad-based increase in prices, with a particularly significant uptick in the price of the alcoholic beverages and tobacco, leisure, recreation and culture, and clothing and footwear sub-categories.
Inflation edged up from 41.2% in November to 41.9% in December, the highest level since June 2004. Meanwhile, annual average inflation increased from 30.1% 32.4%, a figure not seen in over 11 years.
