Data Team Lead

We are looking for an experienced full-time Data Team Lead who will develop, lead and implement the company’s data management and development strategy. This position reports directly to the Managing Director and works closely with the leadership team to ensure the excellent operations of the production platform and the creation of new data products and services for clients.

We are looking for an organizational leader with a passion for data and analysis who has a clear vision for how data can transform company strategy. The role requires hands-on leadership necessary to inspire and grow a team of 15-20 data analysts and data scientists, who build solutions for data needs across the company. The Data Team Lead is responsible for scaling the data function in an environment based primarily on cloud-based SaaS systems.

  • Responsibilities

Strategy and Execution

  • Ensure that all projects are executed in a timely fashion and according to FocusEconomics quality standards
  • Collaborate with all functions of the company to ensure data needs are addressed and the required data is modelled and available to clients
  • Continuously develop database-centered production processes
  • Periodically evaluate current processes, both from organizational and technical points of view, in order to make them more efficient and automated
  • Generate and keep updated documentation of all technical processes both for internal and external purposes
  • Elaborate instructions and documentation to explain processes to Data and Research teams

 

Client Data Enquiries and Projects

  • Manage incoming demand to the Data & Development team, prioritising and assessing requests based on priority, capacity and the suitability of the request for the team
  • Check with the Sales leader the relevance of the client as well as the amount of time to be dedicated for extensive extraordinary requests
  • Participate in client conference calls

 

Managing Data & Development Team

  • Manage a team of 15-20 data analysts and data scientists and enable them to meet professional development objectives
  • Interview and hire staff
  • Ensure all team HR processes are effectively executed

Contribution to Leadership Team (LT)

  • Be an active member of the company’s leadership team and attend weekly LT meetings
  • Contribute insights and ideas to the company’s LT and inform on important developments
  • Attend quarterly (1-day) and annual (2-days) LT offsites

Reporting to Management

  • Provide regular reports to management to inform about department performance and problems
  • Make suggestions to improve the infrastructure (hardware and software) and processes

Requirements

  • Postgraduate work or equivalent experience (Masters or PhD) in quantitative fields (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.)
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in a senior leadership position managing a data team
  • Extensive experience with Python, R, SQL and/or MySQL and relational databases. Experience with multidimensional data models, Salesforce, Azure and Power BI is a plus
  • Advanced Excel knowledge (VBA knowledge a must)
  • Knowledge of and experience with delivering data via API
  • Knowledge of or background in macroeconomics and financial markets is a plus. Experience with economic indicators and forecasts would be a strong asset
  • Knowledge of and experience with Scrum and Agile methodologies
  • Outstanding analytical skills and business acumen – you are able to immediately understand a business opportunity/weakness by looking at a dashboard for the first time
  • High organization skills – can set his own priorities and agenda based on business objectives
  • Strong people management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to communicate, present and influence all levels of the organization, including executive and C-level
  • Self-driven and detail-oriented with strong commitment to deadlines
  • Advanced English, spoken and written
