Foreign direct investment (FDI) has played a crucial role in catalyzing Vietnam’s socio-economic development and its economic integration into the global scene since it started transitioning to a market-oriented model three decades ago. Easing restrictions for foreign investors encouraged a substantial mobilization of overseas capital into the strategically located economy. Investors were drawn to Vietnam’s enormous untapped potential promising high returns, along with a cheap workforce and high endowment of natural resources. A seismic shift in Vietnam’s economic structure from agriculture to industry, since the 1986 Doi Moi economic reforms were implemented, spurred a massive movement of workers from one industry to the other, encouraging the emergence of private domestic and foreign enterprises.

After having fallen for over ten years, the rates of poverty and extreme poverty increased again in a large part of Latin America in 2015 and 2016. But in 2017, thanks to the greater economic dynamism, the indices remained stable, according to the 2017 Social Panorama Report on Latin America, published by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The situation for young people is becoming less bleak, but significant challenges remain
When twenty-one-year-old Laura Avizanda graduated from a Spanish university with a degree in business last summer, she regarded the future with trepidation. Her reaction was understandable; Spain's labor market has been an extremely hostile environment for young people in recent years.
But Laura was pleasantly surprised at how quickly she found employment related to her studies. "I started looking in early September," she says. "By mid-September, I’d found a job." Her classmates have had similar experiences, she adds.
The economic situation of Spain's young people is gradually improving, as the economy continues to recover from one of the worst crises in recent history. Firms are hiring again. Youth unemployment, while still painfully high, has dropped from its 2013 peak of over 50%. The number of young people emigrating is slowly dwindling.

Trade with Latin America is becoming easier, according to the index that measures trade facilitation in 21 Latin American countries, which represented 95% of regional merchandise trade in 2016. Latin America's result again increased two points with respect to the average two years prior, and received a score of 69%. The index measures the "the simplification, standardization and harmonization of procedures and associated information flows required to move goods from seller to buyer and to make payment in order to reduce the time and cost of trade." The latest progress is outlined in the report Trade Facilitation and Paperless Trade Implementation in Latin America and the Caribbean, from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The Turkish lira (TRY) came under intense pressure in late November as political strain with the U.S. intensified and tensions between President Erdogan and Central Bank officials regarding the country’s monetary policy path going forward became more acute. The latest slump in the value of the lira followed renewed pressure by President Erdogan on the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey’s (CBRT) current policy stance. Erdogan argued in mid-November that Bank officials were on “the wrong path”, stressing that high interest rates were hindering economic growth and fueling higher inflation expectations. This was, however, at odds with the overarching view of analysts, who underlined the need for Turkey to tighten monetary conditions in a bid to rein in soaring consumer prices.

The likelihood of a free trade agreement (FTA) between Mercosur and the European Union (EU) is growing. In the most recent round of negotiations held in Brasilia earlier this month, the leaders of both blocs made it clear that they are willing to move towards signing the treaty. Recent advances come within the context of growing protectionism in the United States. While prospects that the treaty will be signed are bright, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. The leaders of both blocs have been negotiating for over 10 years and there are still important obstacles to be overcome.
