According to the Central Statistical Office's Business Tendency Survey (GUS-BTS), the industry index for the expected general business climate inched down from 4.3 points registered in April to 4.2 points in May. Despite the subtle drop, the index remains above the zero-point threshold separating pessimism from optimism for a fourth consecutive month. Compared to the same period of last year, businesses were less optimistic as the index dropped by 3.0 points. The deterioration in the sentiment gauge reflected falling optimism among businesses regarding expected selling prices of their products as well as uncertain foreign order-books. On the other hand, businesses were more optimistic regarding their total volume of liabilities and general economic situation.
