In September, the ISTAT manufacturing sentiment index plunged to 94.5 points. The figure was down from the revised 98.6 points recorded in August (previously reported: 99.9 points) and was below market analyst expectations, which saw sentiment declining to 98.1 points. The reading was in line with the deteriorating trend witnessed since April this year, which was momentarily interrupted in August. With the September drop, business confidence fell to its lowest level since January 2010. According to ISTAT, the deterioration was driven by a worse assessment of the current level of total orders, particularly domestic orders, and of production levels. All four categories of the indicator improved compared to August.
