In March, retail sales rose 13.4% over the same month last year. The print came in above both the 10.1% expansion seen in February and market analysts' expectations of a softer 8.0% increase. According to the statistical office, strong sales of consumer durable goods, clothing and footwear as well as of jewellery and valuable goods overcompensated for lower food sales. In seasonally adjusted terms, however, retail sales fell 0.9% in the three-month period ending in March compared to the previous period ending in December, which contrasted the 0.3% increase recorded in February.
