Consumer confidence jumps in May

In May, the Adimark GfK consumer confidence index (IPEC, Indice de Percepcion de la Economia) jumped to 48.7 points from 46.5 points in April. Despite the monthly increase, consumer sentiment remains below the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism. The result was driven by an improvement in both the current outlook as well as perceptions regarding the national outlook in the next 12 months. In addition, respondents'assessment of their households'current economic situation also improved, whereas their willingness to make major purchases deteriorated somewhat.
