Yanukovych wins first round elections
Ex-premier Viktor Yanukovych, from the Party of Regions, won the first round of the presidential elections held on 17 January, well ahead of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and current President Viktor Yushchenko. However, as no candidate obtained the required 50% majority, Tymoshenko and Yanukovych will face off in a second round on 7 February. Regardless of the outcome, the next president will need to implement tough measures to reduce the budget deficit and obtain the pending US$ 3.8 billion loan tranche suspended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).Ukraine:
