GUATEMALA
Snapshot
Former military officer Otto Pérez Molina won the run-off for the presidential election on 6 November, and will assume office for a four-year term in January. The newly-elected president needs to tackle the current wave of violent crimes and to lead the fight against organised crime, represented by the foreign drug cartels, most commonly from Mexico, who are using Guatemala as a shipment route.
