BOLIVIA
Snapshot
The economy expanded 4.4% in the second quarter, which was slower than the 5.7% growth in the first quarter. The result mainly reflected weaker total consumption, which decelerated from 4.9% in the first quarter to 4.4% in the second quarter. After weeks of protests by Bolivia’s indigenous population, on 21 October, President Evo Morales abandoned plans for the controversial Amazon road project. The purpose of the road (which was to be funded by Brazil) was to provide faster access to Chile’s Pacific ports for Brazilian exports, thus reducing transportation costs.
