ARGENTINA
Snapshot
On 23 October, incumbent president Cristina Fernández won the elections by a landslide, distancing the runner-up Hermes Binner by more than 30 percentage points and thus securing re-election without the need for a run-off vote. The renovated Fernández administration faces important challenges ahead. In particular, the government will have to rein in public spending, which had soared ahead of the elections, and to curb the capital flight, which is putting downward pressure on the Argentine currency.
