Ahead of presidential elections on 4 March, Prime Minister and former President Vladimir Putin firmly leads the polls. However, Putin has lost support in recent months on allegations of electoral fraud in December’s parliamentary elections and faces now the possibility of a run-off vote. Meanwhile, opposition protests continue at the beginning of the year and, on 4 February, thousands of Russians gathered in Moscow and other major cities, demanding a change in the Russian political scene.
