CROATIA
Snapshot
On 22 January, Croatia approved by referendum the country’s accession to the European Union in 2013. Although the turnout was low, 66% of participants voted favourably for EU membership. Meanwhile, the recently elected centre-left coalition government proposed spending cuts of about HKR 4.6 billion (USD 795 million), aimed at curbing a growing fiscal deficit. Additionally, the government announced that it will also raise the VAT and introduce new levies, such as a property tax.
