Vietnam: GDP expands robustly in 2015 on the back of industrial production

In 2015, GDP expanded 6.7% according to data released by the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Vietnam. The reading tallied in 2015 exceeded the government’s expectation of a 6.2% expansion and marked an improvement over 2014’s 6.0% growth.

At the sector level, agricultural production eased from 3.4% in 2014 to 2.4% in 2015, while services inched up from 6.0% to 6.3%. The industry sector saw a sharp expansion of 9.6% (2014: 7.1% year-on-year)—the best reading ever recorded.

The figure for Q4 showed that GDP expanded 7.0 % over the same period of the previous year, which was marginally up from the 6.9% growth seen in Q3 2015.

The government targets growth of 6.7% for 2016. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see the economy growing 6.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists expect the economy to expand 6.7%.
