United Kingdom: Unemployment rate stays unchanged in August

In September, jobless claims increased by 700 from the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The print came in below the revised increase of 7,100 in jobless claims recorded in August (previously reported: 2,400 increase) and undershot the 3,000 increase in jobless claims the markets had expected.

The unemployment rate—derived from a different survey—recorded 4.9% for the fourth consecutive month in August (the latest period for which data are available), thus staying stable at an over ten-year low. The reading met market expectations.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect unemployment to average 5.2% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects the unemployment rate to increase to 5.5%, which is also unchanged from last month’s estimate.
