United Kingdom: Industrial production contracts again in September

In September, industrial production contracted 0.4% over the previous month in seasonally-adjusted terms, which matched the previous month’s figure. The monthly figure reflected a contraction in the mining and quarrying sector as well as in the oil and gas sector. Conversely, the manufacturing sector expanded 0.6%, which followed the previous month’s 0.2% increase.

Industrial production expanded 0.3% over the same month last year in September, which was down from the 0.7% increase seen in August and marked the lowest reading in six months. Annual average growth in industrial production inched down from 1.0% in August to 0.9% in September.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will increase 1.0% in 2016, which is up 0.2 percentage points from the previous month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel expects that industrial production will fall 0.1%, which is also up 0.2 percentage points from last month’s forecast.
