In the third quarter, GDP expanded a strong 6.6% over the same quarter last year, according to preliminary estimates released by the National Statistics Institute on 31 October. The print marked the fastest pace of expansion since the first quarter of 2008, well above both the 3.8% increase recorded in the second quarter and market expectations that had the economy growing 4.4%. A quarter-on-quarter comparison corroborates the notion of acceleration, as the economy increased a seasonally adjusted 2.2% over the previous quarter, which came in above the 0.5% increase observed in the second quarter. Revised and more complete data for GDP will be released late December.
