Taiwan: Industrial output records slowest growth since February in August

September 27, 2021

Industrial output expanded 13.7% compared to the same month of the previous year in August, which followed July's 14.4% increase. August's outturn marked the worst reading since February. August's figure was largely due to a deterioration in manufacturing production, which grew at the slowest pace since February. Meanwhile, electricity and gas supply output picked up pace.

On a monthly basis, industrial production fell 1.0% in seasonally-adjusted terms in August, a less pronounced drop than July’s 1.3% fall. Meanwhile, annual average industrial production growth rose to 12.6% in August (July: +11.8%), signaling an improving trend in the industrial sector.

Panelists see industrial output expanding 12.8% in 2021, which is up 0.9 percentage points from last month’s forecast, and 4.6% in 2022, which is up 0.2 percentage points from last month’s estimate.
