Switzerland Retail September 2016

Switzerland: Fall in retail sales softens in September

In September, Swiss retail sales contracted a seasonally- and working-day adjusted 2.3% from the same month last year, which was a softer drop than the 2.8% decline seen in August. According to the Federal Statistics Office, September’s figure was driven by a mild improvement in food, drinks and tobacco sales.

On a sequential basis, retail sales adjusted for seasonal factors increased 0.2% in September, which contrasted the 0.1% decline seen in August and was the highest reading recorded this year. Nonetheless, the annual average variation in retail sales mirrored August’s 1.9% contraction, marking the lowest level on record.

Panelists polled by FocusEconomics expect private consumption to expand 1.0% in 2016, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s projection. For 2017, the panel expects private consumption to increase 1.3%, which is unchanged from last month’s estimate.
