Switzerland Economic Sentiment February 2016

Leading economic indicator improves slightly in January

Switzerland’s KOF economic barometer—a composite leading indicator for the Swiss economy in the next six months—increased from 96.8 points in December to 100.3 points in January, thus marking a three-month high.

The KOF Swiss Economic Institute commented that the increase in the economic barometer in January was mainly attributed to an improvement of the sentiment in the manufacturing industry. Moreover, the financial sector also increased over the previous month. Conversely, the indicators related to the Swiss hospitality sector deteriorated compared to December.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) expects GDP to expand 1.5% in 2016. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect GDP to expand 0.9% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2017, the panel expects economic growth to accelerate to 1.3%.
