Inflation edges up in March

Consumer prices rose 0.8% over the previous month in March, which followed the 0.1% increase tallied in February. The increase primarily reflects higher prices for clothing and footwear as well as for transport. Annual headline inflation rose from 0.1% in February to 0.6% in March. February's reading represented the lowest rate since October 2009. Meanwhile, annual HICP inflation (based on the harmonized index of consumer prices) increased from 0.2% in February to 0.6% in March. Annual average HICP inflation, however, decreased from 1.5% in February to 1.4% in March, which marked the lowest level since June 2010. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants expect HICP inflation to average 1.5% in 2014, which is down 0.2 percentage points over the previous month's forecast. In 2015, the panel expects HICP inflation to slow to 1.7%.
