In December, industrial output expanded 10.8% year-on-year, well above the 5.3% increase recorded in November. The growth was broad-based, as all categories accelerated over the same month the year before. Mining and quarrying swung from minus 4.4% in November to a striking 41.5% in December. Manufacturing output, which accounts for the bulk of industrial production, rose 10.7% in December, accelerating over the 6.1% pace recorded in the previous month. Finally, public utilities added 9.9% in December, up from the 0.4% rise registered in November. Seasonally adjusted data corroborate the expansion suggested by the annual data, as industrial production added 4.2% over November. As a result, industrial production increased 6.5% in the full year 2010, contrasting the 17.4% contraction observed in 2009.
