The ruling Social Liberal Union (SLU) led by Prime Minister Victor Ponta is the clear favourite ahead of 9 December elections. According to the latest polls, the SLU would obtain 57% of the votes, well ahead of both the coalition formed by the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) and the Alliance for the Romanian Right (ARD) as well as the People's Party (PP), which would come in third. Romania has been embroiled in a power struggle ever since Ponta failed to oust President Traian Basescu last summer through a referendum that did not achieve the necessary turnout. Against this backdrop, the formation of a new government may still be difficult even if the SLU obtains an absolute majority, as Basescu - who is backed by the PLD/ARD coalition and is the only authority with powers to nominate the prime minister - has already hinted that he may not nominate Ponta as the new premier.
