Industrial production accelerates in August

Industrial output rose 6.0% in August over the same month last year, which exceeded July’s 3.7% rise. August’s result represented the largest gain in almost a year. According to the National Institute of Statistics, the reading mainly resulted from solid expansions in manufacturing and in the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply category. Conversely, mining and quarrying recorded a notable contraction.

On a month-on-month basis, industrial production fell 0.53% in August, which contrasted the 0.23% expansion tallied in the previous month. Annual average growth in industrial production rose from 2.6% in July to 3.1% in August.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial production to expand 3.8% in 2015, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s estimate. The panel estimates that industrial output will increase 4.8% in 2016, which is down 0.2 percentage points from last month’s Consensus.
