Romania: Economy picks up steam in Q1

In the first quarter, the economy expanded 4.3% over the same period of the previous year, according to preliminary data released on 13 May. The figure marked an acceleration over Q4’s 3.8% expansion and beat market expectations of a softer 3.8% increase.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP jumped from a 1.1% expansion in seasonally-adjusted terms in Q4 to an impressive 4.2% increase in Q1, marking an all-time high. The Statistical Office (INSSE) will release more detailed data on 7 June.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 4.1% in 2016, which is unchanged over the previous month’s projection. For 2017, the panel expects the economy to expand 3.5%.
