Romania: Economy accelerates in Q1

May 16, 2017

In the first quarter, the economy expanded 5.7% over the same period of last year, according to a preliminary estimate released on 16 May. The figure marked an acceleration from Q4 2016’s 4.8% expansion and vastly overshot market expectations of a slowdown to 4.4%.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP growth adjusted for seasonal effects accelerated to 1.7% in Q1, up from Q4’s reading of 1.3%. The Statistical Office (INSSE) will release more detailed data on 7 June.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect the economy to grow 3.8% in 2017, which is unchanged from last month’s projection. For 2018, the panel expects the economy to expand 3.3%.
