The consumer confidence index improved slightly from minus 53.1 points in April to minus 52.2 points in May, reaching its highest level in nine months. Despite the improvement, the index continues to be deeply mired in negative territory and remains close to the historic low recorded in November 2011. At the current level, consumer sentiment is 3.1 points below the levels observed in the same month last year. Meanwhile, the business confidence indicator deteriorated from minus 18.6 points in April to minus 20.9 points in May. As a result, business sentiment is now 7.1 points below the level observed a year ago.
