In June, industrial production expanded 1.0% over the same month last year, after dropping 5.5% in May. The print defied market expectations, which had industrial output contracting 0.8%. The industrial production expansion mainly reflected increased production of petroleum products as well as increased activity in the non-metallic mineral industry. In contrast, the mining sector dropped for the ninth straight month. Despite the June improvement, annual average growth in industrial production slowed further from 2.9% in May to 2.2% in June.
