Malaysia: Growth in industrial production moderates in September

Industrial production increased 3.2% in September from the same month last year. The figure came in below the 4.9% increase registered in August, and undershot market expectations of a 3.3% rise. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the reading was mainly driven by growth in the manufacturing and electricity sectors, although at a slower pace than in the previous month. Meanwhile, the mining sector declined slightly in September.

On a monthly basis, industrial production fell 0.1% in September in seasonally-adjusted terms, which followed August’s 0.5% decrease. Annual average growth in industrial production edged down to 3.5% in September from August’s 3.7%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists project that industrial production will grow 3.6% in 2016, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s projection. In 2017, the panel expects industrial output to expand 3.6%, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast.
