Economic growth accelerates in Q1

According to a flash estimate released by the National Statistics Office on 29 April, GDP rose 2.4% in Q1 over the same period last year. The reading represented an acceleration compared to the 2.0% increase tallied in Q4 2015 and, if confirmed, will represent the strongest expansion since Q3 2014.

A quarter-on-quarter comparison showed that GDP increased a seasonally- and working-day adjusted 0.8% in Q1, which was up 0.3 percentage points from Q4’s result. More detailed data will be released on 31 May.

The Central Bank expects GDP to grow 2.6% in 2016. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see the economy growing 2.8% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2017, the panel expects GDP to expand 3.2%.
