Japan: Industrial activity drops again in August

Industrial production fell 3.6% month-on-month in seasonally-adjusted terms in August, deteriorating from July’s 1.5% decline.

On an annual basis, factory output rose 8.8% in August, which was well below July’s 11.6% expansion and marked the lowest result since March. Meanwhile, annual average industrial production growth rose to 3.8% in August (July: +1.9%), signaling an improving trend in the industrial sector.

FocusEconomics panelists see industrial production expanding 7.9% in 2021, which is down 0.3 percentage points over the previous month’s projection, and 4.3% in 2022.
