Italy: Economic growth slightly accelerates in Q1

In the first quarter of 2016, GDP grew 0.3% over the previous quarter in seasonally- and working-day adjusted terms, according to an advance estimate released by the National Statistics Office (ISTAT) on 13 May. The result came in slightly above the 0.2% growth tallied in Q4 and matched market expectations. It also marked the highest reading in three quarters. More detailed data will be released on 31 May.

In annual terms, GDP grew 1.0% in Q1, which was slightly below the 1.1% rise observed in Q4.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists see the economy increasing 1.0% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists expect the economy to expand 1.2%.
