In October, the index of consumer sentiment published by ISTAT inched up to 86.4 points from the 86.2 recorded in September, which matched market expectations. Sentiment improved as households are slightly less pessimistic regarding their both their current and future financial situation compared to the previous month In contrast, their expectations on the general economy along with prospects for the purchases of durable goods deteriorated compared to September.

The IHS Markit manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose from 49.8 in August to 51.0 in September, taking it above the 50-threshold that separates expansion from contraction in the manufacturing sector. September’s result mainly reflected a return to growth in new orders, which, in the previous month, had dropped slightly for the first time in over one-and-a-half years.
