Italy: Business confidence rebounds in September

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, increased from a revised 99.5 in August (previously reported: 99.4) to 101.0 in September.

All four categories of the indicator improved compared to August. In particular, the retail sector recorded its highest reading in five months.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 1.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see fixed investment growing 1.3%.

Three out of the four categories of the indicator improved compared to January: manufacturing, services and retail rose, with manufacturing obtaining the best result since February 2008.
