Italy: Business confidence rebounds in September

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers the manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, increased from a revised 99.5 in August (previously reported: 99.4) to 101.0 in September.

All four categories of the indicator improved compared to August. In particular, the retail sector recorded its highest reading in five months.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 1.6% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see fixed investment growing 1.3%.

All four categories of the indicator improved compared to March, with manufacturing registering the strongest result in over nine years on the back of higher order books and production expectations, while construction registered the best reading since April 2008 due to improved assessments regarding construction plans and higher employment expectations.

April’s reading reflected deteriorations in households’ assessments of the current general economic situation and the future general economic situation—with unemployment expectations worsening substantially—likely due to the uncertain political framework and the perceived absence of a clear economic reform plan.
