Italy: Business confidence continues to strengthen in October

The National Institute of Statistics’ (Istat) composite business confidence indicator (IESE, Istat Economic Sentiment Indicator), which covers Italy's manufacturing, construction, service and retail sectors, increased from a revised 102.2 in September (previously reported: 101.0) to 102.4 in October.

Three out of the four categories of the indicator improved compared to September: manufacturing, services and construction. Only the retail sector deteriorated slightly from the previous month.

Panelists expect fixed investment to increase 1.7% in 2016, which is up 0.1 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists see fixed investment growing 1.3%, which is unchanged from last month’s projection.

All four categories of the indicator improved compared to March, with manufacturing registering the strongest result in over nine years on the back of higher order books and production expectations, while construction registered the best reading since April 2008 due to improved assessments regarding construction plans and higher employment expectations.
