Exports swing to contraction in January

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), in January exports totaled USD 4.5 billion, which matched December’s figure. The reading marked a 3.1% decrease over the same month of the previous year (December: +2.8% year-on-year).

Meanwhile, imports totaled USD 4.7 billion in January, which was down from the USD 5.4 billion seen in December. January’s reading was a 1.2% decrease year-on-year, which contracted the 13.8% drop observed in the previous month.

The trade balance recorded a USD 0.2 billion shortfall in January, which was an improvement from the USD 1.0 billion deficit seen in December.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect exports to contract 3.0% in 2016. For 2017, the panel expects exports to expand 4.5%.
