Business sentiment declined in September as firms remain sceptical about better business conditions over the remainder of the year. The business confidence index published by the Ifo Institute dropped from 108.7 points in August to 107.5 points in September, recording the third consecutive drop and marking the lowest level since June 2010. Nevertheless, the September outturn overshot market expectations that business confidence would fall to 106.5 points. The September deterioration reflected a less optimistic assessment of business prospects for the next six months, which fell to its lowest level in over two years. In addition, businesses' current conditions deteriorated marginally.
