France: Inflation remained steady in October

According to revised figures released by the National Statistical Institute (INSEE), French consumer prices were flat in October (September: -0.2% month-on-month). October’s reading reflected higher prices for energy, which more than offset lower prices for food products.

Inflation in October remained steady at the 0.4% print observed in September. Meanwhile, annual average inflation mirrored September’s 0.1% reading.

Harmonized consumer prices (based on the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP)) remained stable in October (September: -0.2% month-on-month). Harmonized inflation in October matched September’s 0.5% print. Meanwhile, annual average HICP inflation in October remained steady at September’s 0.2% reading.

The government expects inflation to average 0.1% in 2016 and 1.0% in 2017. FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect HICP inflation to average 0.3% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, panelists project that inflation will accelerate to 1.2%, which is also unchanged.
