In May, the business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by Icare and the Universidad Adolfo Ibanez inched down to 60.3 points from 60.8 points in April. Despite the deterioration, the index remains above the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism. The weaker reading was broad-based, as almost all sub-categories of the index deteriorated somewhat over the previous month. Construction and mining recorded the largest drops, although both sub-sectors remained in optimistic territory. On the other hand, commerce was the only category to improve over the previous month.
