In August, the business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by Icare and Universidad Adolfo Ibanez edged up to 59.7 points from 59.3 points in July. With the increase, the index moved further above the 50-point threshold that separates optimism from pessimism, suggesting a positive outlook for investment going forward. The stronger August reading reflected a notable improvement in the mining sector, which offset a deterioration in commerce and industry. At the current level, all sub-categories remain above the 50-point threshold, thus implying an optimistic outlook in all the main industrial sectors.
