Business confidence drops in October on weaker sentiment in mining sector

The business confidence index (IMCE, Indicador Mensual de Confianza Empresarial) published by ICARE and the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez, fell from September’s 45.3 points to 43.0 points in October. As a result, the index remains below the 50-point threshold that separates pessimism from optimism.

October’s setback mainly reflected that confidence in the mining sector fell to an eight-month low, and—to a lesser extent—weaker sentiment in the trade sector. Conversely, confidence among the construction and the industry sectors improved.

Panelists surveyed for this month’s LatinFocus report expect fixed investment to grow 1.4% in 2015, which is up 0.3 percentage points from last month’s estimate. In 2016, the panel expects private investment to increase 1.3%, which is down 0.3 percentage points from last month’s Consensus.
