Bulgaria Inflation April 2016

Bulgaria: Consumer prices record substantial annual drop in April

May 13, 2016

In April, consumer prices were unchanged over the previous month, which was up from March’s 0.7% decline. According to the National Statistical Institute, the flat reading was the result of a mix of price increases and decreases across categories. A surge in prices for clothing and footwear did not compensate for the tumble in prices for the other goods.

On an annual basis, consumer prices fell 2.2% in March, which was a notably bigger drop than the 1.5% decrease recorded in March and marked the fastest year-on-year decrease since March 2014. Meanwhile, annual average consumer prices in April were slightly lower than in March, inching down from minus 0.2% to minus 0.4%.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see inflation at 0.6% in 2016, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. In 2017, panelists expect inflation of 1.7%.
