Growth in industrial production picks up in August

In August, industrial production grew 2.6% from the same month last year in working-day adjusted terms, accelerating from July’s 2.3% increase. August’s result reflected an acceleration in manufacturing and in mining and quarrying. Within the manufacturing category, motor vehicle output registered the highest growth, followed by fabricated metal products.

A month-on-month comparison showed that industrial production expanded a seasonally-adjusted 0.7% in August, which contrasted the 1.5% contraction registered in the preceding month. Annual average growth in industrial production edged down from 2.1% in July to 2.0% in August, the lowest reading in 13 months.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see industrial production expanding 2.6% in 2016, which is down 0.1 percentage points from last month’s Consensus. For 2017, panelists see industrial output growing 3.3%.
