Industrial production returns to growth in June

In June, industrial production increased a seasonally-adjusted 2.0% over the previous month, which contrasted the 0.4% contraction in May. The increase came despite three of the four components registering contractions; only the manufacturing component posted a positive reading in June.

In annual terms, industrial production expanded 6.6% in June, coming in above the 6.4% rise in May. Meanwhile, annual average growth edged up from 2.4% in May to an over two-year high of 2.9% in June.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect industrial output to expand 2.8% in 2016, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2017, the panel sees industrial production growth slowing to 1.9%.
