Belarus: Industrial production expands for the first time in 16 months

In April, industrial production expanded 2.9% over the same month last year, contrasting the 2.0% contraction tallied in March. April’s print marks the first expansion in industrial production since December 2014, putting an end to a streak of 15 consecutive contractions According to the National Statistical Committee (BELSTAT), the reading came on the back of an expansion in manufacturing that more than offset a contraction in the three remaining components of the index.

Meanwhile, annual average growth in industrial production jumped from minus 5.8% in March to minus 4.9% in April.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast participants see industrial production contracting 1.1% in 2016, which is up 0.4 percentage points from last month’s Consensus. For 2017, panelists see industrial output growing 1.3%.
