Consumer confidence inches up in August

The consumer confidence index elaborated by Fessel-GfK inched up from July’s minus 12 points to minus 11 points in August. As a result, the index remains entrenched below the 0-point threshold, which indicates that pessimists outnumber optimists.

August’s result partly reflected consumers’ more optimistic assessments regarding both the current and future economic situation. In addition, consumers’ were more upbeat regarding employment prospects and the current financial situation.

FocusEconomics Consensus Forecast panelists expect private consumption to expand 0.7% in 2015, which is unchanged from last month’s forecast. For 2016, panelists see private consumption rising 1.1%.
